Tutti i libri che hai pubblicato in Italia hanno sempre raggiunto un certo successo, perciò è logico considerarti una regina del romance anche in questo paese. Da dove trai l’ispirazione per i tuoi libri?
Aw! Grazie per il grande complimento! Ora, per rispondere alla tua domanda: prendo ispirazione da dove capita. A volte mi accade di sentire una conversazione, quando sono fuori, in pubblico, e si accende l’idea. Altre volte, le idee si formano mentre faccio lavori domestici o gioco con i miei figli. Quando, invece, sono attivamente alla ricerca di ispirazione, leggo articoli sull’epoca di cui scrivo. Non esiste una formula assoluta, l’ispirazione può scaturire in molti modi.
Come mai hai scelto proprio il periodo Regency per ambientare i tuoi romanzi?
Sono sempre stata un grande lettrice sin dai tempi della mia adolescenza. Ho iniziato a leggere drammi e misteri familiari, ma presto ho scoperto il romanticismo storico e mi sono innamorata. Ho letto tutti i libri Regency su cui potevo mettere le mie piccole mani e intanto sognavo di scrivere il mio. Naturalmente, quando finalmente ho il coraggio di provare a scrivere un libro, ho scelto il Regency come genere.
Le protagoniste femminili dei tuoi romanzi sono donne forti, determinate, con una grande personalità. Ma l’amore vince su tutto. Cosa puoi dirci al riguardo?
Penso che quando scriviamo, le persone che conosciamo, incluso noi stessi, entriamo nella storia. Sono circondata da donne forti nella vita reale e mi piace pensare di esserlo a mia volta. È a loro che attingo quando creo i miei protagonisti femminili. Ma credo anche che il vero amore vinca su tutto e che tutti meritino un lieto fine.
A proposito di Appuntamento al chiaro di luna (l’ultimo romanzo uscito n.d.r): si può leggere come un classico romance ma di fatto introduce un elemento peculiare: il senso di responsabilità. La responsabilità del Conte di Harcourt a proposito delle sue passate imprese e quello di Lady Tabitha a cui si chiede di capire e accettare nel nome dell’amore. Cosa puoi dirci?
I miei figli sarebbero i primi a dire che credo fortemente nell’assunzione della responsabilità delle nostre azioni. Gli dico sempre: “hai commesso il crimine e ora ne sconterai la pena. Dico anche un sacco di altre cose, sia positive che negative, sull’essere responsabile delle nostre scelte. Il conte di Harcourt comprende che ha una responsabilità, ed essendo l’uomo onorevole che è, fa ciò che è giusto. Credo anche nel potere dell’amore e nel suo trionfo. Poiché Lady Tabitha ama il conte, deve accettare il suo passato e abbracciare il futuro.
Quali sono i tuoi libri e autori/autrici preferiti?
Mi sono innamorata innanzitutto di Johanna Lindsey e della sua serie: Malory. Continuo a divorare i suoi libri, ma sono anche a favore di altri autori. Lisa Kleypas è incredibile! Potrei leggere il suo libro Un libertino dal cuore di ghiaccio più e più volte e non stancarmi mai. Do you want to start a scandal di Tessa Dare è un altro dei miei preferiti. Adoro anche i libri di Sarah McLean.
Quali sono gli ingredienti perfetti per un buon romance, secondo te?
Bella domanda! Due persone che si amano, un ostacolo da oltrepassare, la crescita personale e la crescita della coppia, il “vissero felici e contenti”, rendono un romance perfetto.
In Italia, dopo il RARE a Roma, lo scorso giugno, una parte della stampa ha polemizzato contro il genere romance definendolo banale, sciatto e adatto solo a far evadere un certo tipo di lettrici/casalinghe disperate. Come rispondi a questa polemica?
C’è stata la stessa polemica anche negli Stati Uniti. Penso che il romance sia stato stigmatizzato da coloro che non l’hanno mai veramente letto o non lo capiscono. In realtà, i romanzi d’amore affrontano anche problemi seri. Tutto, dal suicidio alla droga, alla mancanza di una fissa dimora, è stato esplorato nelle pagine di un romanzo rosa. I temi comuni dell’amore, del perdono, della forza interiore e del coraggio. I lettori del romance non cercano solo evasione nelle pagine dei loro libri preferiti, ma esplorano anche le questioni del mondo reale. Vorrei chiedere alle persone di provare almeno a leggere un romance prima di considerarlo un genere non rispettabile.

All of your books always get a great successes, so we can consider you as a queen of romance here in Italy. Where do you get the inspiration from?
Aw! Thankyou for the great compliment!! Now to answer your question. I get inspiration from all different places. Sometimes I over hear a conversation when I am out in public that sparks an idea. Other times I am doing house work or playing eith my kids and an idea forms. When I am activly seeking inspiration, I read articles about the time periods I write in. There is realy no formula for where my ideas come from because they come from everywhere.
Why did you choose the period of regency to set your novels?
I have been a big reader ever since my teen years. I started out reading family drama’s and mysteries, but soon found historical romance and fell in love. I devouered every Regency book I could get my little hands on and dreamed of writing my own. Naturally, when I finally got brave enough to try writing a book, I choose Regency for the genre.
Your female protagonists are always women with a very strong personality but, in the end, love conquers it all. What can you tell us about it?
I think that when we write people we know, including ourselves, bleed into the story. I am surrounded by strong women in real life and like to think that I am also a strong woman. I draw on that when I create my female leads. I believe that true love does conquer all and that everyone deserves a happy ending.
Let’s talk about “One moonlit tryst”. It can be read as a classic romance but actually introduces a peculiar element: responsibility. That of the Earl of Harcourt about his past actions and that of Lady Tabitha who is called to understand and accept them in the name of love. What can you tell us about it?
My kids will be the first to tell you that I strongly believe in taking responsibility for our own actions. I am always telling them, “You did the crime, now you have to do the time.” I also say a slew of other things, both positive and negative, about being responsible for our choices. The Earl of Harcourt understands that he has a responsibility and being the honorable man that he is, he does what’s right. I also believe in the power of love to triumph. Because Tabitha loves the earl, she has to accept the past and embrace the future.
What are the ingredients for a perfect romance, according to you?
Good question! Two people who love each other, an obsticle to over come, personal growth as well as growth as a couple, and a happily ever after makes for the perfect romance.
What are your favorite books and authors?
I first fell in love with Johanna Lindsey and her Malory series. I still devour her books, but have also come to favore a few other authors. Lisa Kleypas is amazing! I could read her book Cold Hearted Rake over and over again and never tire of it. Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare is another favorite. I also adore Sarah McLean’s books.
In Italy, after the RARE meeting in June, some journalist raised a little controversy about romance as a literary genre, calling it banal, obvious, sloppy and suitable only as an escape reading for desperate housewives. How do you respond to these controversies?
We have also had that question raised in the United States. I think romance is given a bad stigma by those who have not read it, or do not understand it. In reality, romance books tackle series issues. Everything from suicide to drug adiction and homelessness have been explored in the pages of a romance novel. Common themes of love, forgivness, inner strength, and bravery apear across the genre. Romance readers not only find an escape withon the pages of their favorite books, but they also explore real world issues. I would ask that people give romance a try before discounting it as a respectable genre.
